Testing

Although  buildings constructed in the past two decades are not as likely to have  asbestos materials, all projects involving renovation or demolition are  suspect unless the affected area has been tested. Recent legislation in  Oregon is mandating that deconstructed general building materials that  may contain asbestos, must have documented results prior to disposal. AbateTek  LLC can help with this determination and refer you to a licenced  abatement contractor . We will only recommend contractors that fit your budget and your project. They can then abate and dispose of your construction debris in a proper condition that is both safe and legal. 

Three definitions you need to know:      

PACM -    ( Presumed Asbestos Containing Material ).
ACM   -     ( Asbestos Containing Material. (Any material containing more than 1% asbestos).
NAD   -     ( No Asbestos Detected ).
 

Suspect materials must be tested for asbestos content prior to disturbing for any reason.

In addition,Identification of ACM and PACM should be made by an AHERA trained Certified Inspector. Samples will be analyzed by a N V L A P. (National Voluntary  Laboratory  Accreditation Program). This is what school districts use for their testing guidelines.

ABOUT ASBESTOS

Asbestos is the name given to a group of six different fibrous minerals (amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, tremolite,  actinolite, and anthophyllite)  that occur naturally in rock minerals. Asbestos minerals have separable  fibers that are  strong and flexible enough to be spun or woven. Not  only are they tough and pliable, they are extremely heat resistant. 

Because of these characteristics, asbestos has been used for a wide  range of manufactured goods. Primarily, asbestos fibers are found in  building materials. These include roofing shingles, ceiling and floor  adhesives, wall and ceiling textures, heat-resistant fabrics, tile and  sheet vinyl, paper and tape products as well as cement products.  

Friction products include automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts, packaging, gaskets, and coatings. It is also known that some Vermiculite attic insulation and talc products may also contain asbestos. ​When these fibers become airborne they can be very dangerous to humans.  Especially the lungs. This occurs when encapsulated asbestos containing  materials are disturbed, such as being crushed, broken or sawed into  pieces. Sometimes the cause is simply it's environment and the age of the material. In either case, when it degrades ,falls apart and becomes friable, it's hazardous . In these cases, by law, proper testing and disposal by a licenced abatement specialist is required.
